Rom and Trish first met as classmates in the Pathways Program at Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond — on Zoom. Called & Sent grew out of that friendship.

Born in the Philippines
Rom's call came early. At thirteen, after a communicants' class taught by Reverend Kenneth Kettlewell, he gave his life to Christ — and first dreamed of becoming a minister and a missionary.
Family and cultural expectations pointed elsewhere. He earned a degree in accounting, came to the United States in 1973 as a student, completed his MBA, and was hired by Arthur Young — now Ernst & Young — then one of the world's "Big 8" firms. A career in corporate finance followed, and with it a family he calls his blessings: a daughter who is a lawyer, a son who is a filmmaker, and three grandchildren.
The dream never left him. After forty-three years, he answered it.

Patricia Leonard Higgins

Trish — a native of Hanover County — describes herself as "not normally a risk-taker," which makes her story all the more striking. In 1971 she entered the University of Virginia with its second-ever class of undergraduate women, earned her nursing degree, and later returned for a master's in community health. Her career was spent in public health nursing, including twenty-five years teaching at her alma mater. She and her husband Ron, whom she met during orientation week, have been married fifty-one years.
Then came August 2017. The "Unite the Right" rally in her longtime home of Charlottesville left her deeply distressed, and sent her searching for how her faith should answer such a moment. That search led to the Pathways Program at Union Presbyterian Seminary — and to a Zoom classmate named Rom.
Since 2024 she has served as a commissioned lay pastor at Ashland Presbyterian Church, whose mission statement reads: "Called to love, Sent to serve." She is now in her final year of a dual M.Div. and Master's in Public Theology.

Rev. Dr. Nelson Reveley

Nelson is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) who leads discipleship at Grace Covenant in Richmond — guiding adults and families in prayer, formation, and practical faith.
He studied religion at Princeton, earned a Master of Divinity at Union Presbyterian Seminary and a Master of Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, and holds a doctorate in religious studies from the University of Virginia, where his work focused on Christian ethics — economics, human flourishing, and ecology.
Rom first met him years ago, when Nelson worked with his daughter on a high school project. They met again decades later at Grace Covenant, and the friendship has continued over coffee at Ellwood Thompson's ever since. He is known for preaching that stays with people — thoughtful, carefully prepared, and honest.
